I received a press release from Pulse yesterday detailing various sales highlights, though I’m not sure what to make of it. More than one of the dealers listed as closing impressive deals had talked at great length about how tweaked the economy was making them. Also, since when does a curator expressing interest in work qualify as sales news? With that said, ArtInfo published a detailed Pulse sales report, so it would seem at least a couple galleries have done okay. I’ve posted the release after the jump with the caveat that it may be a little more “spinny” than usual.
Bitforms Gallery
Sold out of a series of video based “shadow boxes” by artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Each were priced at $90,000. In addition, several metal kinetic sculptures from a series of ten by U-Ram Choe have sold for $40,000 each.
Max Protetch
Sold the remaining eight works in the edition of ten in Siebren Versteeg’s series of large internet-enabled touchscreen monitors that was mentioned in yesterday’s highlights. The works began at $25,000 each.
Marx and Zavattero
A curator for a major French manufacturer of luxury goods has expressed interest in Libby Black’s paper and mixed media sculptures of exercise equipment that are emblazoned with high-end brand logos
Yossi Milo
Sold a large photograph by Pieter Hugo of an African man and his tamed Hyena to Williams College for $12,500. The New York gallerist is anticipating a strong showing this weekend. The gallery also moved multiple photographs by artists Sze Tsung Leong and Myoung Ho Lee.
Conner Contemporary Art
Has sold multiple light sculptures by Leo Villareal ranging in price from $25,000 to $85,000, and reports interest from a major museum in his project “Horizon” included in PULSE’s series of large-scale sculptures and installations.
Freight + Volume
Owner Nick Lawrence the sale of two major Sylvan Lionni works at $10,000. The gallery also placed two large acrylic text-paintings by Erik Den Breejen on reserve, along with two large marker-on-paper “notebook paper drawings” by Michael Scoggins.

Sold a large (60 x 40) drawing by Jon Rappleye to a new collector for $7500

Without anything to compare it to, this is not strong news. If they’re touting a curator saying he’s interested, selling a $7500 drawing to a new collector, and placing things on reserve, times are tough. That said, my experience of Pulse last year left me wondering how they sold much of anything given the quality of the work.
