Our impulse to cope with fear through laughter remains intact.

Just as many horror flicks employ a certain brand of morbid humor to temper fear so too does much of Danse Macabre imagery. I disagree with the zombie thesis since death is allegorical in mid/late medieval period, a personification which the zombie is not. I also liked the collection of posed "living" anatomical sketches which, when grouped together, are very powerful. But again, this isn't the zombie, more the grotesque. But these quibbles I think have more to do with liking the traditional zombie belief tradition and wishing more people knew about it. Nice page and a great eye for themes. Learned a lot.

Thank you for this. Those pictures inspired awe in me as a teenager and resonate today. Also, the genre of the memento mori is prime ground for pulling up images of the Grim Reaper rounding up sinners. The period of the Black Death provoked many great engravings, often incorporating another favorite symbol of mine, the winged hourglass.I was particularly struck by the usage of the snakes as Death's accouterments in the Knoblochtzer images. Worn as a headband, pierced through the limbs; truly fantastic.

Great article.

In my opinion, the pinnacle of the anatomical engravings are those associated with O.G. anatomist, Andreas Vesalius.
