Max Gimblett, Low Tide, 1996 Mother of Pearl, 36 two piece units
Max Gimblett’s sea shell art seen last night at the Asian Contemporary Art Fair represents some of the worst skulls I’ve seen to date. The problem with choosing bones as subject matter is that they are already pretty cheesy; simply upping the anti and using treasures from the sea as material only exasperates this. I guess the piece is supposed to have some sort of spiritual something or other to it. I couldn’t care less.
On an art fair note, ACAF might be a good one to skip this weekend. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many paintings and figurative sculptures of child-like women in underwear and boots. The rest of the fair was pretty horrible too.
