Inspired in part by the five hundred million feline jpegs circulating the web, LOLcats begin with a found cat image file, which is then doctored with bold text and LOLspeak to further cutify the animal. Typically the text used locates the cat in the first clause and describes an action of a human in the second. For example:
Totally cute!
Adorable!
This kitten breaks the format described, but it’s all for a good cause. Awesome!
Now, I can’t begin to explain why LOLcats have become the phenomenon they are today, but I do know that we must be reaching some sort of critical mass if LOLcats from the musical are showing up in searches. Putting aside the perhaps larger worry that theatre nerds have finally found the Internet, I’m fascinated by the fact that these things even exist.
