Paris Hilton was arrested for drunk driving last year because she’s an irresponsible fool and sculptor Daniel Edwards’ response is to match such stupidity with a trite sculpture that plays upon media frenzy and then act like its social message gives it a higher purpose. Witness the gallery press release which describes the work as follows;

I don’t know when damaged internal organs began to represent deep investigations of the perils of drinking, but perhaps the gallery should start targeting high schools as potential clients, since they claim the work targets this demographic. Of course, Capla Kesting will undoubtedly tell you that sculptor Daniel Edwards merely builds upon a body of work that investigates celebrity culture. If last year’s “Monument to Pro-Life“, an equally attention seeking piece featuring Britney Spears giving birth is any indication it may well be. After all Paris Hilton Autopsy stands in contrast to Defamer’s famous words on Monument to Pro-Life,

    can not discount this art as it is very well done, just can not see it on display in someone’s home. Art is in the eye of the beholder and we are sure it is just a monument.

    I don’t find this sculpture trite. I think its brilliant.
    It opens up more than Hiltons stomach- it opens a multitude of debates.
    Think about the issue of empty icons in our culture. One can literally open this princess up to see that she is nothing but normal human guts inside.
    The male gaze, usually fed by glamorous images of Hilton, gets confused and redirected elsewhere, as she is supposed to be everything but glamorous here. Yet this is an extremely erotic pose compared to, for example, Rembrandt’s ‘Anatomy lesson of Dr. Nicolaus Tulp”. Does consumer culture find unsettling images of girls in need of a psychological spanking erotic?
    This is what some art should do… probe and ask questions about the world around it, but also about itself.
